Chili a great way to warm up -- Seville Quarter Chili Cook Off

With temperatures about to take another icy dip, it’s a great time to warm up with some chili.

Just in time, Seville Quarter’s 18th annual Great American Chili Cook-off is set for Saturday, so whether you love to cook chili or you just love to eat it, go ahead and clear your calendar.

Seville Quarter’s Buck Mitchell said there still are a few competition slots open for cooking teams. Cooking begins at noon, and chefs must prepare their concoctions from scratch on site. Three-person teams compete for a $20 entry fee, with chilis judged on taste, consistency and smell. Trophies are awarded for the top three chilis, plus awards for showmanship (decoration and team entertainment) and people’s choice.

Speaking of the people, they’ll be ushered in at 4 p.m. for the two-hour public tasting. The $10 entry fee will get you a chance to taste all the chili you like, and vote for your favorites.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Seville Sertoma Club.

More chili is on the menu from 5 to 7 p.m. Jan. 31, as Escambia Christian School presents its 15th annual Cougar Chili Cook-off at the school gym, 3311 W. Moreno St.

Tasters are welcome to chow down on all the chili they can eat, along with dessert, crackers and cornbread. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children ages 12 and younger in advance; $7.50 for adults and $5 for children at the door. Soft drinks will be available at an additional charge. Tasters also will vote on the People’s Choice winner.
