Wine of the Month – 2015 Squadra Rosso (Italy)

By Bill Carlson

Squadra is a new wine by two Americans with a passion for Italian wine who met while working together at arguably the BEST Restaurant in America, The French Laundry.  Bobby Stuckey is a Master Sommelier along with his partner Chef Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson developed Scarpetta Winery with specialized in Italian Wine from the unheralded region of Friuli.

The Squadra series of wines are a modern, slightly hipsterish style of Italian Wines with an Italian cyclist on the label with wine bottles in the racks where water should be.  The wines are not traditionally rustic or tannic like many of the old world Italian wines can be.

The 2015 Squadra Rosso is a Red Blend from Sicily that I tasted a few weeks ago and has quickly become a favorite.  The Island of Sicily is a mountainous Island and the Rosso uses two grapes that thrive in that elevation and climate.  The blend is 75% Nero d'Avola and 25% Nerello Mascalese and aged in tank and concrete.  I absolutely love the freshness and lively acidity of this wine!  Cherry and spice notes pop in your mouth and it has enough structure so it’s not a simple fruit bomb.  If you’re into organic wines the grapes are certified organic.

As the two partners now have a successful Italian Restaurant in Boulder, Colorado you can be assured these wines were meant to be paired with food.  Yes, pizza and pasta, but also heavier fare from short ribs to lamb chops.  You’re going to really like the price on this too as its selling for $13.49 in Seville’s Wine Shop.  Look for the wine with the cyclist on the label traversing the hills and valleys of Sicily.
