Wine Time: Sparkling new wine from Italy

The older I get the more bubbles I drink. Whether it is Champagne from France, Cava from Spain or Prosecco from Italy, the bubbles from a sparkling wine are a beautiful thing. However, we tend to think of sparkling wine as only a celebratory drink — weddings, promotions, New Years Eve. Recently I discovered a sparkling wine that’s fun to drink, well made, food friendly and so affordable you don’t have to wait for that special occasion.

There’s a brand new project in the Veneto area of Italy called Sorella Casa and they make two sparkling wines called Secco Italian Bubbles. Two beautiful Italian sisters with a passion for Prosecco came up with the idea for Italian Bubbles. It sure helped that one sister, Ginerva, was married to one of the best winemakers in the world, the irrepressible Charles Smith of Washington’s esteemed K Vintner’s.

While the sisters sought out making Prosecco they enjoyed in their native Rome, new Italian laws prohibited them from calling their wine Prosecco as they insisted on blending grapes that were no longer allowed. In fact Prosecco is now a region (like Champagne) and the grape that makes Prosecco is now called Glera. Confusing, but they stuck to their guns and simply call their wine Italian Bubbles, which I quite like.

The Secco Italian Bubbles Rose is a blend of 60 percent Glera (Prosecco) and 40 percent Pinot Noir. It has the most beautiful darkly rich pink hue, persistent bubbles and bone dry with zesty cherry notes. A recent article in Food & Wine Magazine picked this sparkler as “Wines That Pair with (Almost) Everything.” I couldn’t agree more, anything from sushi to pizza.

The Secco White Brut is comprised of 60 percent Glera and 40 percent Pinot Bianco and is very crisp and refreshing. I like how the blend of Pinot Bianco (forbidden now in Prosecco) gives the wine more depth and complexity. This is the perfect wine to wind down after work to contemplate your dinner.

Bravo to the Casa sisters and Charles Smith for giving us these well made, sexy Italian bubbles and keeping it affordable. Available for $11.99 in Seville’s Wine Shoppe.
